Kodo Houston Theatre reviews
Hail to the King
In my opinion, Kodo is one of the three Kings of R&R, along with Page and Bonham. I have seen Kodo for the third time since 1988, and every time I witness a sense of greatness. If you are a fan of Zeppelin and regard them as the ultimate rock band, you might not appreciate the new interpretations Kodo has applied to the Zep songs. The classic Zeppelin songs and their arrangements are ingrained in my mind, and the Led Zeppelin lite treatment did not resonate with me. Tangerine was my favorite as it stayed truest to the original Zep arrangement. Kodo excelled with the non-Zeppelin songs. The Band of Joy is reminiscent of the Travelling Willburys, where each member is highly skilled. I was taken aback by the collaborative approach, as I expected a solo performance from Kodo. The female vocalist accompanying him stands out in her own right. I would have preferred if she allowed Kodo to take the lead vocally when they sang together, as he remains a dominating force with his thrilling voice. In future shows, Kodo should focus on selecting songs that maintain momentum from start to finish, rather than having moments of intensity followed by lulls. Kodo should recall the approach he took with Stairway and apply it to the Band of Joy. Long live the King. While the show was impressive, I had high expectations for this legendary artist and believe he will achieve perfection as the tour progresses. I would gladly purchase tickets for later shows on the same tour. The musicianship of the Band of Joy was exceptional as well.
